Your Hands Are Aging Faster Than Your Face

Raise your hand if you spend a lot of time and money on your face. We’re talking serums. SPF. Moisturizers. Facials. Retinol. Eye cream for the eye cream.

Meanwhile… our hands are out here doing all the work and getting almost none of the attention.

Here’s something most people don’t realize. Your hands often show signs of aging before your face does. And in Portland, where we finally see the sun again in late spring, that matters.

Hands work hard for us.

Think about it. Your hands are constantly exposed. Driving. Walking outside. Sitting by windows. Running errands. And how often are you applying sunscreen to them?

Exactly.

UV exposure breaks down collagen. That leads to fine lines, thinning skin, pigmentation, and that “crepey look” people notice but can’t quite name. Add in constant washing, sanitizer, and environmental stress, and your hands are working overtime.

The irony is that your manicure can either highlight that… or help soften it.

Healthy, well-shaped nails draw attention in a polished way. Dry cuticles and uneven texture do the opposite. That’s not vanity. That’s visual balance.

Here’s what you need to do.

Let’s talk about what actually helps.

First, we’re telling you to please put SPF on your hands. Every day. Especially while driving. It takes less than ten seconds, and it protects the skin you’re constantly showing off. If you invest in skincare for your face but skip your hands, you are only doing half the job.

Second, we talk about cuticle oil all the time. I’m just going to say this again…cuticle oil should not be an optional self-care routine. It keeps the surrounding skin hydrated and flexible. Hydrated skin looks smoother. It also supports nail health, which prevents peeling and splitting that can make hands look rougher than they need to.

Third, regular manicures do more than look pretty. Gentle exfoliation, proper cuticle care, and structured shaping all contribute to a more refined appearance. It is subtle, but it makes a difference.

Hands tell stories.

This is also the time of year when events start stacking up. Graduation photos. Outdoor weddings. Mother’s Day brunch.

Speaking of Mother’s Day, it’s May 10th this year. And if you have ever built anything from scratch, whether that is a family or a business, you know how much support matters.

Melissa, owner of Bella Hands, will be the first to tell you that her mom has been one of her biggest supporters in building her business. Behind every small business owner who keeps showing up, there is usually someone in their corner saying, “You can do this.” That kind of encouragement fuels a lot more than we talk about.

Mother’s Day is a beautiful reminder that hands tell stories. The hands that raised us. The hands that held us up. The hands that built businesses, homes, and lives.

So taking care of your hands is not just about polish. It is about respecting the work they have done.

It’s not complicated.

I want to give just a gentle recap. As we head into sunnier months in Oregon, this is your reminder to treat your hands like you treat your face.

  • Use SPF.
  • Hydrate consistently.
  • Schedule maintenance instead of waiting until something breaks.

You do not need complicated routines. You need consistency.

Your hands are visible every single day. They deserve care that matches the effort they put in.

And if you are not sure where to start, that is what we are here for. At Bella Hands, we care about the health of what is underneath your nails. Because polished hands are beautiful. And, healthy hands are powerful.
