Winter Care for Nails
Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter weather can have a huge impact on your nails and skin. So, what’s the why, what, and how of winter care for your nails? Here are three tips from a long-time nail tech, Melissa Schumann, Owner of Bella Hands located in Milwaukie, a suburb of Portland, Oregon.
- MOISTURIZE!
We notice the dry skin that comes with the colder weather, but lots of times forget to moisturize our nails right along with our bodies. If you don’t moisturize your nails will be prone to breaking much easier. They may even be brittle and flaky or start peeling. Just a little bit of oil on your skin will work. I love to use coconut oil around my nails. Massage it in daily and your nails will thank you!
- APPLY A BASE COAT!
I always use a base coat with my clients. It’s the protective layer that can make the difference in nails being damaged. Base coats also seal in moisture and they make your nails look better. Don’t skip this step if you’re DIY-ing at home and make sure your nail tech is using it when you’re in the salon!
- CUTICLE OIL IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!
If there is one thing I recommend to every client it’s using cuticle oil year-round, but especially in the winter. Your cuticles are protecting your nails, so, please don’t cut them off! Cuticles are the protective seal that keeps out all the bad stuff like bacteria, dirt, and more that can cause big problems with your nails.
As a bonus, Melissa reminds clients to eat healthily. “What you put in your body is just as important for nail care. The nutrients in fruits, nuts, and vegetables can make a big difference in keeping nails healthy and strong!”
As you’re out and about during the winter season, make sure to practice smart nail care while you enjoy the cold!
