What Should You Know About Your Nail Tech?

As the proud owner of Bella Hands and a veteran of 22+ years working as a nail tech, I know the importance of building a trusting relationship with clients. When you think about your nail tech, they are not just a skilled professional who transforms your nails into works of art; they are experts in their field with specialized education and training. Knowing a bit about their background and the tools of their trade can ensure you have a skilled technician who is properly licensed and understands safety and sanitary best practices.

Here are a few things you should know about your nail tech:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

One crucial aspect to consider is the education and training that your nail technician has undergone. Reputable nail technicians typically complete a formal education program at a state-licensed school. This education equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a wide range of nail services. From basic manicures and pedicures to intricate nail art, a well-trained nail tech should be proficient in various techniques.

In addition to formal education, ongoing training is crucial for nail technicians to stay current with the latest trends and techniques in the ever-evolving beauty industry.

Look for a nail tech who invests time and effort into continuing education, attending workshops, and keeping up with advancements in nail care. This dedication ensures that your nail tech is well-equipped to provide you with the latest and best nail services.

TECHNOLOGY

Technological proficiency is another aspect to consider when evaluating your nail tech’s expertise. Modern nail salons are incorporating advanced technologies to enhance the overall client experience. Nail technicians should be familiar with the latest tools and equipment, including electric files, UV lamps, and other innovative devices used in the nail care process. This not only reflects their commitment to staying current but also ensures a more efficient and enjoyable salon experience for you.

SAFETY AND SANITATION

Safety and sanitation should not be taken lightly. A responsible and knowledgeable nail technician should prioritize these aspects to ensure a hygienic and risk-free environment for every client. In any reputable nail salon, stringent protocols are in place to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.

This includes thorough handwashing between clients, using disposable gloves when necessary, and sanitizing tools and equipment between each client. Proper sanitation not only prevents the spread of infections but also fosters an environment where clients can confidently relax and enjoy their services without concerns about potential health risks.

When it comes to nail treatments, such as acrylics or gel extensions, a skilled nail tech should be well-versed in the importance of proper application and removal techniques. Incorrect procedures can lead to damage or infection, emphasizing the need for precision and care. A responsible technician will educate clients on aftercare practices to maintain the health of their nails and surrounding skin.

With a global pandemic not so far in our past, many salons, including Bella Hands, have implemented additional safety measures. This includes the use of personal protective equipment, regular salon deep cleaning, and adherence to local health guidelines.

Clients should feel comfortable discussing any concerns they may have regarding safety and sanitation with their nail tech, ensuring a transparent and collaborative approach to maintaining a clean and secure environment.

OREGON NAIL TECHNICIAN REQUIREMENTS

Now, for my fellow Oregonians, understanding the specific requirements for nail technicians in our state is essential. In Oregon, nail technicians are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours at a state-licensed school. Additionally, prospective nail technicians must pass two exams — a rigorous process to ensure we nail techs are well versed in all aspects of our craft and to continue to promote high standards of professionalism and safety.

DON’T SETTLE FOR LESS THAN THE BEST

The next time you visit your favorite nail salon, take a moment to ask your nail tech any questions that stand out to you. By understanding the educational background, ongoing training, and technological proficiency of your nail technician, you can make informed choices about the type of salon you choose and understand the risks that come with that choice.

That way you can sit back, relax, and let the pampering begin with confidence that you have put your nails (and your trust) in the best hands.
