Over the past twenty years as a nail technician and small business owner, I’ve learned the importance of self-care. While taking care of others and enhancing their beauty, I realized that it’s crucial that I also remember to take care of myself. You can incorporate these tips for self-care into your own life no matter your age or profession.
Embracing the Passion
Two decades ago, I embarked on a journey as a nail technician. The nail salon became my second home, and my clients, my extended family. I poured my heart and soul into every manicure, pedicure, and nail art session, determined to bring joy and confidence to everyone who stepped through Bella Hands’ door. As the years passed, my passion for beautifying nails only grew stronger, but I also learned that it was equally essential to beautify my inner self.
The Neglected Soul
Amid the hustle and bustle of work and daily life, I found myself unintentionally neglecting my own well-being. My schedule was packed with appointments, and I often pushed aside my own needs for rest and relaxation. I used to think that putting myself first was selfish, but I’ve come to realize that it’s the opposite. Taking care of myself not only rejuvenates my spirit but also allows me to be the best version of myself for my clients.
Learning to Prioritize Self-Care
After hitting a few burnout phases and experiencing the toll it took on my body, creativity, and enthusiasm, I knew it was time to make a change. Slowly but surely, I began to prioritize self-care, giving myself the permission to indulge in activities that nourished my mind, body, and soul. Here are some self-care tips that have transformed my life, and I hope they do the same for you.
Unplug Regularly: In the age of technology, it’s essential to disconnect from screens and immerse ourselves in the present moment. Set aside dedicated time each day to be screen-free, allowing yourself to be fully present with your loved ones and engage in activities you truly enjoy. I spend my non-screen time snuggling with my dogs and enjoying the absolute joy that they find in being with me.
Nourish Your Body: As a nail technician, our hands are our most valuable tools. Treat them carefully by moisturizing regularly, using cuticle oils, and investing in hand massages. You can always get top notch pampered self-care at Bella Hands!
Practice Mindfulness: Take a few moments each day to practice mindfulness or meditation. This can help reduce stress, enhance focus, and improve overall mental health. If you aren’t into that, then it’s about just being silent. Listen to your breathing. Feel your emotions in that moment and keep your mind open.
Quality Sleep: A good night’s rest is non-negotiable for self-care. Ensure you get enough sleep to recharge your body and mind, allowing you to tackle each day with renewed energy.
Hobbies and Passions: Rediscover or explore hobbies and passions outside of work. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or dancing, engaging in activities that ignite your soul can be incredibly fulfilling. I spend a lot of time at the barn with my horses. It’s a break from the norm and brings me incredible joy. I also love to travel. Being able to immerse myself in another culture and location rejuvenates and inspires me.
Boundaries and Saying No: It’s okay to set boundaries and say no when needed. Learn to prioritize your time and energy on things that truly matter to you. I work hard to try and get every client the time they need, but when it’s my day off, I need that time to focus on the things I need.
Connect with Nature: Spending time in nature can be incredibly grounding and restorative. Take a walk in the park, go for a hike, or simply sit and admire the beauty around you. We just happen to live in one of the most beautiful and green spaces in the world. How much have you explored Oregon?
