Keep your nails in tip-top shape with these four tips from salon owner, Melissa Schumann. As a nail tech with over 20 years in the industry, she’s got the know-how to stop brittle, peeling nails and unhappy hands. So, grab a cup of whatever you love to drink, sit back, and let’s dive into the wonderful world of nail care.
1. Nourish from the Inside Out.
First things first, beauty starts from within! Your nails need the right nutrients to grow strong and healthy. Incorporate foods rich in biotin, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids into your diet. Think eggs, nuts, spinach, and fish like salmon. Not a fan of those? No worries, you can also find these vitamins in supplement form. I’ve seen clients transform their nails just by tweaking their diets a bit.
2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
Just like your skin, your nails need moisture to stay strong. Dry nails are more prone to breaking and splitting, so it’s important to keep them hydrated. Use a good quality cuticle oil or cream daily. Massage it into your nails and cuticles to keep them supple.
At Bella Hands we love to use Dadi Oil. It’s $7 for a mini bottle of .125oz or $15 for .5 oz bottle. You can grab it the next time you’re in the shop for a nail appointment.
Keep a little bottle in your bag and apply it whenever you have a spare moment – your nails will stay happy and hydrated.

3. Mind Your Manicure Habits.
We don’t recommend it, but if you aren’t going to wait for your next nail appointment be sure you use the right quality tools to remove enhancements or polish.
When removing nail polish, be gentle. Soak a cotton ball in remover and press it onto your nail for a few seconds to dissolve the polish, rather than scrubbing it off. This minimizes friction and reduces the risk of weakening your nails. And always resist the urge to pick or peel off your polish, especially gel polish. This can strip away layers of your nails, leaving them weak and vulnerable..
4. Your Nails are not Tools!
Your nails are not tools! I repeat, your nails are not tools! Treat them gently to avoid unnecessary damage. Use the pads of your fingers to open cans and avoid using your nails to pry things open. Also, when filing your nails, always file in one direction. Sawing back and forth can cause splitting and weaken your nails. These little changes can make a big difference in keeping your nails strong and beautiful.
Bonus Tip: Professional Care
Of course, regular visits to your nail tech at Bella Hands will make a world of difference. We provide personalized advice and treatments tailored to your specific nail needs. Plus, who doesn’t love a bit of pampering? Regular nail appointments, done right, can help maintain nail health and strength.
So there you have it – our top four (plus a bonus!) tips for strengthening your nails. Remember, healthy nails don’t happen overnight, but with a bit of patience and consistency, you’ll see improvement.
Raise your cup to strong, beautiful nails!
